| Sangamon County Clerk Joe Aiello first introduced the new and innovative voting machines at the March 2006 primary.
The electronic voting equipment, chosen by Sangamon County, is a digital paper ballot system manufactured by Populex Corporation. The system is classified as an optical scan voting system since it produces a paper ballot that is scanned.
The innovative system allows voters to cast their votes on a touch screen system that produces a paper ballot. The official ballot, printed with a bar code containing the voter's selections, is then scanned to cast and record the votes.
The voting system has many great features including capabilities to prevent voters from making errors and it also provides several opportunities for the voters to verify their selections before casting their ballot. Most importantly, this system meets accessibility requirements by allowing voters with disabilities to vote independently and privately. Through the use of an audio system and headset, a blind or visually impaired voter can vote without assistance. Also, a sip and puff device will be available at every polling place to allow voters with physical limitations to vote independently.
